Trying to get back to normal

Here we are, 3 days after the funeral (which was beautiful) , and we are trying our hardest to get back to normal. Mom is doing well considering and I don't think I really have had the time to really grieve yet since I'm so busy taking care of Mom and the house and my kids and work. Part of me is angry about this and I feel guilty, but I know that is wrong.

We are very thankful for those that came to the services. It really lets you know who really cares and who your 'true' friends are.  I will be honest here, since what do I have to lose? There were some people that didn't come that should have and it makes me very upset and angry. But, life goes on and I have to focus on my family and healing now.

Today, when we checked the mail, the nicest thing was in there. Yes, there were mass cards and other cards, but there was one card that really stood out and made me smile. It was a card from one of Dad's cousins. It wasn't the card that made me smile, but what he wrote. He shared memories that he had of him and Dad growing up. Of all the stories Mom and Dad have told us all these years, I never heard the stories that he wrote about. It really warmed my heart. Then Mom and I sat on the deck and she shared more stories of the two of them and how they used to live across the street from each other in the garden apartments and such.  I really enjoyed it.  If anyone else has stories they would like to share, it would be awesome to receive them. I really don't have a lot of pictures of Dad when he was young either so if anyone has any, I would for you to send them.

Although time goes on, it seems to be getting harder and harder, but I'm sure eventually it will get easier.  I found a poem that made me cry and seems as though it was written for my Dad. I will leave you with it:

God looked around his garden And He found an empty place. And then He looked down upon the earth,And saw your tired face. He put His arms around you,And lifted you to rest. God's garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed your weary eyelids, And whispered "Peace be thine." It broke our hearts to lose you. But you didn't go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home.

RIP Dad, we miss you and love you

At Peace

I am with mixed emotions to say that Dad is now at peace with no more pain or worry or struggle. He passed on Thursday, July 28th. He is the strongest man I will ever know, but he met his match with the cancer and after 2 long years of battle, he is now with God.  I am so proud to call him my Dad.

Funeral arrangements are being made today and I will update when I have them.

Another Day

I got up early this morning and was with Dad at 7:00 a.m. in order to be there when his doctor got there and of course the doctor didn't show up until almost 11:00 a.m.  Just my luck

Dad had a rough night. He woke up somewhere around 3:00 a.m. and had a horrible nightmare about being in a war. He woke up and thought it was real and got out of bed by himself on the wrong side and ended up getting all tangled up in his wires. From the story I got he did finally push the call bell and the nurses came rushing in and had to calm him down and get him back in bed and unraveled.  When I showed up I saw the sign on his door that said "bed alarm" and right as I read it, the one nurses aide saw me and said your dad is making all that noise (I could hear the alarms going while he was moving around in his bed. They are very touchy)

Good thing about today is Dad has lots of help since today the student nurses where there so every time we needed something, someone was there really quick. After I spoke with Dad and he told me what had happened the student nurse came in and explained to me what she read about the incident as well. I was very upset and started crying. Let me back track a bit since I didn't get to update yesterday evening. I found out last night that dad hasn't had any pain meds since Monday after the NG tube went in. Which, is good that he isn't in pain anymore, but doesn't explain his 'loopiness'. So, after hearing what happened during the night and seeing him this morning, I'm just very worried that something isn't right with him.

Alot went on this morning, but while the nurse was giving him his bath she noticed that his port was leaking. She called in the nurse and she had to call the IV nurse to the room. Turns out he must have pulled out his needle from the port last night during his scare. I was upset and voiced it about how the nurses didn't check it after they got him back in bed, but of course everybody present now wasn't there during the night.

Finally the doc came in and I voiced my anger about the nurses not checking the port and he did make me feel a little better stating that sometimes it's hard to know that it's not in because of the tape that is around it to hold it in place. That made me feel better. He said it's not as bad as the nurses made it sound and they put an IV in his arm to get his 'sugar water' for today and then tomorrow they should be able to access the port again so they can resume his nutrition, etc.  We also discussed his 'loopiness' and the doc is ordering bloodwork to see if there is anything funky going on. He did say that liver disease can sometimes cause excess ammonia to be in the blood and that could be the cause, but the test will show us if there's anything going on. He also said that he will order another XRay to see how things are going. He said he wants to make sure that there's not a block also in his small intestines. But, he said when we first came to the hospital and they did the XRay that it didn't show any signs, but he wants to be sure. I let the doctor know that I had to leave soon so he has my cell number and will call me with the results.

Later, Dad's case manager had visited and we discussed his occupational therapy and physical therapy that he will start receiving today. She stated that they will evaluate him throughout his stay and that will determine whether or not he is safe enough to go home or whether he will need to go to rehab when he's released.  She also discussed that he'll be getting trained on how to take care of his ostomy bag and the person that will be there for him should also learn. Well, I guess that will be me since Mom can't do it. I'm not sure that i'm ready for this, but of course, it's my Dad, and I will do anything for him.

Clark and I were up to see Dad last night and we brought him a VCR and some movies since he's extremely bored and really doesn't like TV. He was happy about it, but of course last night we couldn't hook it up because the wires weren't long enough. Today when the one nurses aide was in the room she saw the DVD and I told her what happened and next thing you know she brought in a table and we were able to set it up for him. Now the problem was that Dad had requested a box set that he had, but it was about War. We turned it on and as I watched the first minute of it, I said to him that I didn't think this was such a good idea especially with the dream he just had last night. He agreed, so later I will bring him something more of a comedy for him.

Looks as though Dad is in this for the long haul and probably won't be getting out for at least another week. I hate seeing him like this. He's so sad and bored and angry and weak. I could keep going on with the ANDS.

I finally got back home around 1:00 and will now attempt to get some work work done for Todd and take care of Mom and then will go back to the hospital later on.

Hanging in there

Went and saw Dad this morning. He's doing well. He's very weak and a bit down since he now knows he won't be coming home until next week. He was really hoping to get home tomorrow, but since the set back with the small intestine, there's just no way. The pain meds have him a bit out of it and he's getting frustrated when he can't remember things. I told him that it's because of the meds and he'll be fine when he doesn't have to take them anymore.  The therapist was in today and took him for a walk and spoke with him about getting him a walker instead of the cane.  He's still on nothing by mouth except sips of water or gingerale which isn't making him happy either. He's still on his pain meds and is still getting his antibiotics. Doc was in this  morning, but Dad doesn't remember what he said. I'm going to see if I can go early in the am tomorrow so that I can catch the doc when he makes his rounds. Of course, you never know when he will be there, so I'll have to just get there early early and hang around until he does.

I'm going to try and make it over there again later, but I first have to take Mom to the doctor since her knee is becoming infected from her fall. It's always something.

Relief

OK...it's been a tough day. I was speaking to Dad on the phone this morning and he didn't sound right. Of course, he's all doped up from his meds so talking to him is a chore, but he was telling me how he was throwing up alot, couldn't eat, his back was killing him, and the nurses were never coming when he called.

I was so frustrated, I decided I needed to get down there right away and went. When I got there, Dad looked miserable. He was constantly tossing and turning and was in pain because of his back. The nurse said to me it's probably from the bed and being in the OR and it's his body 'waking' up after all the stuff going on. I was doubtful. Then he starting vomiting. And let me tell you, it was the most disgusting this I had ever seen. I was so upset. It was black in color and just didn't look right. I questioned the nurses aid and she brought the nurse in. I told her something is wrong and that's not right. She called the doctor and the doctor order an XRay.

Meanwhile, my phone was dying and I needed to make phone calls about work. I go to the parking garage to find that my charger is not there. I was so mad.  Then, the storms come and boy they were strong. Of course, I didn't have an umbrella so I tried to wait out the storm, but it was never ending so I eventually hobbled into the hospital (can't run because my knee is still messed up).

I finally get back to the hospital and Dad is sitting in the doorway on the gurney. He said he just got back from XRay. Boy that was fast. So, a short time the doctor comes in and explains that the results show the small intestines are inflamed. So, he said they were going to put an NG tube in which will suck out the fluid that's in there. He said it's a complication that should be relieved in time. I asked the doctor if that's why his back was hurting so much and he said he wasn't sure, but it could be a variety of things.

Well, as soon as they got the tube in, the fluids started flowing and he filled up one cup within 2 minutes. By the time I left he was on his 3rd. We were joking that he really was "full of sh*t".  I wasn't going to leave for a while, but Dad said his back was relieved and was thanking me for pushing them to do testing. He was finally comfortable again and said he was going to go to sleep.

So, now he's back on ice chips and of course this set back means that Dad will not be coming home by Wednesday as we had hoped.

uncertain

dad is now back on no liquids. hes been throwing up a lot this morning and its been dark brown in color. the doc was called and dad just got back from xray.  they want to make sure there is no obstruction  or leakage going on. we are waiting for the results.

please say a prayer.

Not so bad

Doc says Dad's doing well and recovering nicely. He could be home by Wednesday, so that's great. He still is in pain from the surgery, but the meds are helping with that. His blood pressure has been very high since Thursday, so they were giving him meds to lower it and today it was very low. Like 90 over 56 or something like that. Luckily, they just took it and it was 110/64 so it's getting better.

He's in good spirits, although he has been complaining about the bed and how is back hurts because of it. haha that's how you know he's feeling better when he starts complaining.  He's finally on liquids and he was loving that this morning when we were there. He drank everything in site :)  Tomorrow he'll hopefully start on mush food, as I like to call it.

So, things are finally starting to look up. I've been staying with Mom since the whole thing started and as much as I love her, I'm really getting home sick. But I do what I have to do :)

Thanks for all the prayers.

We spent some time with Dad today and he's doing well. He's in good spirits and the drugs are doing well for his pain.  Still only on ice chips. Tomorrow he should be able to do liquids and if that goes well, then the next day he will try soft foods.

He's such a trooper

The Latest

Just got word that Dad is off the ventillar and will be going back to his room shortly.  Doc said everything was good, however the tumor is very large and lower than the had originally thought. The doc was going to try and  remove some of the tumor, but since it was so low, he was not able to. But, we weren't expecting him to be able to anyway.

We weren't able to see Dad after the surgery since he was going to be in recovery so long and they weren't sure whether he would be going back to his normal room or ICU. The doc was going to allow me to see him in the recovery room, but he said he wouldn't know I was there so I opted out since seeing him like that I was not ready for.

So, I am home with Mom now and we are going to try and get some sleep and will be back at the hospital as soon as we are allowed. Hope Dad sleeps well tonight

Thanks for all the great comments, messages, and texts. It really means alot to have so many friends and family that care.

Love to all,

Tammy

Finally answers

It's late, i'm tired, but the short version of the story is he has a total blockage of his colon and will be having a colostomy tomorrow afternoon.

I will update more later, but right now I need to eat something, talk to my mom about everything that has happened, and then go to bed.

Prayers are appreciated.

No change

There is no change in Dad's status today. Still no bowel movement. He called the doc office and they told him to continue with the milk of magnesium and try prune juice. hehe Dad wasn't happy with that. I stopped at the store on my way home from my doc appt and got him some and he's taken a couple glasses already.  Tonight, he was awake and you can see/hear that he's in pain. I told him to call his doc right now. He argued with me that since it was 8 o'clock at night that they won't be in. I constantly explain to him that they have answering services. So, he finally called and the doc called back within 4 minutes and told him to continue what he was doing and that he doesn't feel there is a urgent need for him to go to hospital yet. He told him to take more MOM and see what happens in the morning and to call the office if there's been no change.

That made me feel better that he finally called and I was there when he did so I could hear what the doc was telling him.

On a side note....Mom had a bad fall today. She's an avid treadmill walker and today she must have pushed a wrong button and the treadmill took off really fast and threw her. She's bruised up pretty good and has a nice fox burn type cut on her knee. Of course, she wasn't using the safety clip that I have been lecturing her to use for months now.  She's ok, just really sore and bruised up.

I'll be checking in on them in the morning and i'll update tomorrow.

Stay cool!

Setback

Got a phone call tonight around 7:00ish from Dad asking me what we were having for dinner and if we could bring Mom something. He then tells me that he has been in bed all day and is not feeling well (another blockage and haven't had a bowel movement in 3 days). Of course, I rushed over and sat with mom and had dinner with her. He was in bed the whole time I was there. He agreed that if he doesn't have a bowel movement by tomorrow that he will have to go to the doctor.

What this may mean is, if he has to go to the doctors tomorrow, the doctor will automatically arrange to have a colostomy bag put in. He had already told us this the last time Dad had a problem when he was in all that pain months back.  Please say a prayer that the stool softeners and all that Dad took today and yesterday will finally take effect and all will be well.

Will keep you updated tomorrow. I have a ortho appointment tomorrow morning for my knee, and then will be headed over to see what the plan is for dad.

Until tomorrow

Balance issues and CAT scan

The last couple of weeks Dad has been having more and more balance issues. I think some of it is that he is wearing himself out, but one can never be too sure. Two weeks ago my son was over helping Dad weed his gardens and he called me saying "Papa fell and can't get up" my husband dropped everything and ran down to help him. (I'm still nursing my busted knee so me rushing is a joke)  While this was going on, I called the house to tell them that Clark was on his way and Mom had no idea what was going on. So, she went to the door to see if Dad was ok, and she falls. Poor Clark had to rescue both of them. Luckily, both of them were fine.

Dad had a doctor appointment Last Monday and he told the doc about his falls and the doctor wanted to do a CAT scan to make sure that there isn't anything major going on. Dad had the CAT scan today so we should have the results next week when he sees the doctor again. I will be sure to go to this appointment and will keep you all informed after we find out the results.

Other than this excitement, there really isn't a whole lot going on. Dad seems a lot more tired than he usually is, so it looks like this week I will be sending meals down to them so he won't have to worry about cooking. We cooked breakfast and lunch at their house yesterday and today we sent down roast beef.

Please say a prayer for a dear, close friend of ours whose mother is in the hospital at this moment. xoxoxo

Until next time,

Tammy

Bracelet fundraiser and Dad doing good

No news to really report. Dad is doing well and being strong. I'm sure soon they will be doing more blood work to see how the new pill chemotherapy is doing. I will be sure to let you all know how that is doing.

The fundraiser is still going on, so anyone who still wants to buy a bracelet or wants to help distribute them, please let me know.

A very close friend has graciously helped us sell a bunch to girls at her dance studio that she teaches. What she has done is so greatly appreciated. She has also shared some pictures. These girls are stunning :)

New Chemo and Another Fall

Dad started his new chemo yesteday. Hopefully it goes well for him. So far so good. He takes 2 pills in the morning and 1 pill at night for 2 weeks straight. It sure beats having to sit at the hospital for 5+ hours.  He has a handy compartment with each day am and pm on it so he won't get confused if he took them or not. I filled them up this morning for him so he's all set. He will continue this for a while and get blood work to watch his tumor marker, and as long as everything is good, he will be able to do this for some time before we have to switch it up. Say your prayers, cross your fingers, or whatever it is that you do and hope that it works out well for him. It would be nice for him to be able to do this for the summer.

Dad's is so anxious to get all his gardening and flowers/plants planted that he's been doing them himself.  He's doing it slowly, but his legs aren't doing too well and today, while I was standing right next to him, he tipped over and hit the road. Luckily he was kneeling down when it happened so the fall wasn't too hard, but he did cut his head open and his elbow again. I had to pick  him up and then walk him back to the house and bandage him up. I'm so upset about this. His balance is really bad these days. I feel horrible because I was right next to him when it happened and I couldn't do anything. I was too far away to catch him and he tipped the opposite way that I was.  He's ok now, but I warned him that he can't be leaning over and kneeling to do things anymore. I know this upsets  him, and knowing him, he won't listen.  He has been falling at least once a week lately, most of the time, he tries to hide it from me, but luckily Mom tells me,.

So, I have a job for my family this Monday when everyone comes. I don't want to hear any whining or anything, but we need to get his gardening done for him. I did finish up what he was doing today when he fell and he promised he wouldn't do anymore today. But, if we don't get it done for him, there's no promising that he won't try it again. With all of us chipping in, it shouldn't take that long. I appreciate everyone's help with this.

Doing Good

Dad's been doing pretty good. He's been busy playing in the garden and tiring himself out. He has this week and next week off from chemo and then he will start his next therapy - Pill. He's excited about it. I just hope this therapy works as well as the other and keeps his cancer stable. Say a prayer that it works well for him.  Meanwhile, he's enjoying his time off from chemo.

We still have lots of bracelets to sell. Would love it if you spread the word so we can raise more money for Dad's chemo bills. :)

Hope everyone is staying dry.

Better Day

Dad seems to be feeling a lot better today. I think it was that he had overworked himself yesterday. I also yelled at him because he hasn't been eating before he takes his medications, which can also be a problem for his belly aches.

I am happy to report that we have raised $255.00 so far for Dad's fundraiser and I gave $225.00 of it to him today to help pay bills that he was stressing about. $30.00 more of it is sitting in paypal and I will be forwarding that to is checking account today. He was so happy, he didn't know what to say. I wanted to hold the money and present it to him more formally, but he has been talking about his money problems for a couple of days now, so I figured it was the right time.  Since the checks were made out to me, I signed them and then had him sign the backs, but wouldn't let him see who the checks were from. hehe  They have been deposited this afternoon.

Thanks to everyone who has donated money to Dad's cause. We still have lots of bracelets left and hope to continue this.

Feeling not so Good

Today started out well. We spent the morning with Mom and Dad having our typical Sunday breakfast, which was a bit more special since it was Mother's Day. Clark even did the dishes for me, which is usually my duty since i'm on duty Sundays with Mom.  Dad spent a lot of the day outside working on the yard edging the grass. He's such a stubborn man and I think he may have pushed himself too much.

Although he has been struggling with stomach issues this past week, tonight was bad. He and Mom came to our house for dinner and he was not himself. He was practically falling asleep at the table a couple of times and just wasn't his normal chipper self. He barely ate anything for dinner and said he was just not feeling well which we could totally tell. He ended up leaving early and went straight to bed. I ended up driving Mom home and I checked on him and he was sleeping soundly, so that is good. I did the husbandly duties and put my to bed and took care of the doggie and locked up the house since i'm sure he'll be asleep for the rest of the night.

I hope tomorrow is a better day. I will be there early tomorrow so I'll see what's going on.

Hope everyone who's a mommy had a great day :)

CAT Scan Update

Today was Dad's appointment with his oncologist and then his chemotherapy was right after. The visit went well. Hmmm where do I start? First off, the CAT Scan showed stable disease. Although the report is very confusing to read (I have a copy) the oncologist summarized it and said that he is stable, so that is good. Of course we would like to hear that the tumors are shrinking, but we will take stable.  The oncologist we saw was not the usual one that I was used to seeing. I really liked him. He is very thorough and he speaks in layman's terms which is nice to understand. He showed us the graph of Dad's CEA levels (tumor marker) which has been very sporadic throughout the last year and a half. I asked lots of questions and he was awesome with answering them.

I asked what our options are at this point and he said that there are still options. One of course would be to stop chemo altogether, which isn't an option for Dad and he has made that clear (thank God!) He explained that basically there is only 4 medications that can treat Dad's cancer. One of which his body has already showed immunity to which is why they changed his dosing about a month or so ago when his CEA levels started to rise (this is also why Dad has lost his hair and now has a cute bald head). He then brought up what is very exciting and it was the first time I saw Dad smile with his cute gums showing hehe. He said that Dad could take a pill form of the chemotherapy in which he would take 2 pills a day for a three week interval. Then he would have to come in to run tests and such. This would mean no more 5 hour visits to the hospital or them accessing his port to push the chemo through. Dad was so excited. He stated that he would take if for about 3 cycles and they will watch his blood work to see where his CEA levels are going to make sure that it works. If it works, then he can do this for a while. He did say that if the levels increase a bit, that they may opt to give him Avastin (starves the tumor) in which he would go in every two weeks for that, but that would only be an hour visit. I asked if that meant no more "Russel" (Russel is dad's pump that he has to carry around from the time he leaves chemo until Wednesday when he has to go and have it removed. It pumps the one drug that he receives sporadically throughout the 3 days. Dad calls it Russel because that was the name of one of Dad's boss's that he absolutely despised). The oncologist said it would be eliminated. Dad was glowing. It was nice to see some excitement out of him for a change.

I was a bit confused why this option was not offered to us before now and I did ask the oncologist, but he was in the middle of typing things in the computer and by the time he was done, the topic got changed. It's a bit bothersome, but I'm thinking it's probably because when he was first diagnosed, they wanted to do the most aggressive chemo and the pill probably wasn't the most aggressive. Not sure if this is true, but that's my thoughts.

So, long story short, Dad's cancer is stable and after this week he will have 3 weeks off and then will start the pill form of chemo.  Please pray that he responds well.

God Bless Our Troops

Nice Letter and Advice

I received a very nice letter today from one of Dad's cousins, Chip and his wife Terry. It is heartwarming to know that others are following Dad's progress and are reading my updates. It was also very exciting to receive a letter from a family member that I have never met. Maybe someday we can.  Thank you for the letter and kind donation Chip and Terry, it is much appreciated :)

One point I want to make clear, is that our family DOES have a history of Colon Cancer. Not just with Dad, but also with his Uncle and Aunt who unfortunately lost their battle. I know I have stressed this on my blog and in person, but it REALLY is important for anyone related to our family or if anyone else has a family history, to be checked at age 40. If you don't have history, then age 50 it is.  I had mine scheduled for last week, only to find out that my lovely copay is $200.00! It's steep, but it just delayed me a month or two until I go and have it done, but I am still doing it. If caught early, colon cancer can be treated, if not cured. So please, take my advice. Sometimes I look back and wonder if Dad had only had his colonoscopy sooner, what might have been. But I know we can't turn back time, so we have to live for today.

Anyway, Dad is feeling pretty good lately besides the diarrhea issues. He was out and about this morning running to the post office, bank, and a couple of stores. I'm sure as I write this he is probably napping, but he's allowed. :)

Hope everyone is staying cool. Here in PA it's sticky and icky the last couple of days. I'm so tempted to turn on the AC, but i'm holding back. hehe

Love to all,

Tammy

Updates

We had an awesome Easter. I hope everyone did as well. It was the first time in a while that our whole family (all 5 siblings and spouses, 10 grandchildren, and Mom and Dad) were together. 22 people strong were at my house partying on Easter. I was very nice and I know Mom and Dad loved it. I think the neighbors were a bit shocked at just how loud we can be hehe It's the first time we were all together in my house. One of Dad's good friends that always checks on him did mention that he could hear us partying. haha  All in good fun.

Dad had his CAT scan yesterday. No news yet and we probably won't hear anything until his doc appointment next week. I will be sure to go with him to get the scoop. He's doing well. He did have some problems after the visit yesterday and was up all night with bowel issues, but he seemed pretty good this morning.  I will keep you updated

A little Background

The story...

November 2009, Dad was having problems with blood in the stool and was losing weight so he had made an appointment with his doctor to discuss. The doctor recommended that he go for a colonoscopy since he was due to have one anyway and to rule out any problems. So, we went to have the procedure done (I was his driver). The procedure itself only took about 30 minutes, and within 45 they had come to the door to ask me to come in. I went in and figured I was just going to sit with Dad until he was ready to be released, since they have to watch him a bit because of the anesthesia they give you.  Well, the doctor came in to go over the procedure and says "Well, we found some polyps that we did remove, but there's also some tumors and i'm 99% sure it's cancer". My heart stopped. WHAT? How can that be? This was supposed to be a regular maintenance type of thing. I just looked at my dad sitting there...helpless...just shaking his head. The man that I always knew to be the strong protector type, is lying in bed helpless and cancer is taking over his body. I cried, and cried...I tried to be strong for my dad, but the tears just wouldn't stop. We just sat there for a while and I held his leg, since I was sitting at the foot of his bed. Then the nurses came in and went over about a hundred things that we had to do next.

It's all a blur to me now, but we had to go for biopsies, and CAT scans and PET scans. We saw one surgeon and then had a second opinion at Fox Cancer Center. Dad decided that he wanted to have his procedures done local since Fox was too far of a drive. The diagnosis is Stage IV Colon Cancer. It has spread to the liver and his lymph nodes. So, he started his Chemotherapy in January 2010 and has been going just about every 2 weeks with doc visits and surgeon visits in between. He's had several CAT scans and blood tests and PET scans in between as well.

During the last year and a half, he has been a real trooper. So tough, and determined. He's done very well, with a couple of problems, including a hospital stay because of what they believe was the start of appendicitis. Luckily, they did a short procedure without having to remove the appendix and he has been fine since.  He has dropped about 40+ pounds since he started his chemo and has finally lost all of his hair, but he's still fighting.

It's funny how nobody wants or can give an answer on the life expectancy of a Stage IV Colon Cancer patient. His last surgeon appointment that was about a month or so ago was interesting. I don't even know what other word to use. The surgeon told Dad how he was impressed that Dad has taken to the chemo so well and is still fighting. He told Dad that the first day he saw him, he really thought to himself that Dad wouldn't have made it past 6 months. Now hearing this breaks my heart, but on the same note makes me happy and proud. Happy that he didn't tell my dad, because that could have been a deal breaker, and that dad is such a fighter that he outsmarted the surgeon AND his cancer  :) But the surgeon said that since Dad's doing so well, that we will just keep on with the chemo since it seems to be working.

Dad's tumor marker has gone up and down since he started the chemo, but lately the number has climbed, so they had changed his doses of Avastin that he receives (starves the tumor) and that hopefully will do the trick. Dad has an appointment next week for another CAT scan so please say a prayer, cross your fingers, or whatever it is you can do that the results are good.

It's hard to think that Dad's days can be numbered, or not. We are just living each day now to it's fullest and fighting along the way.

NOBODY FIGHTS ALONE

Dinner Out

Dad was very energetic today. He even went and got wood chips and shovelled them in his truck himself. We of course went over after Clark was done work and helped him out although we thought we would have had to help him with the wood chips, but our nice neighbor had stopped over and helped Dad. He's a great guy. After we were done helping Dad out, we had plans to go to dinner. Dad called me earlier in the afternoon and asked if we wanted to go to dinner with them. I was shocked. I've been bugging him and Mom about getting out and enjoying life since they are so predictable and are always home cooped up. So, of course I couldn't refuse and we all went out to this nice Irish Pub in town and even ate outside since it was so nice out. We had a great time. Don't worry, we both paid for our share hehe.

Well, that's pretty much it for today. Hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weather.

Night

Better

I'm happy to report that Dad is feeling better lately. He's in good spirits and is hobbling around hehe. A little joke I have with him is he's always walking around with his toes in the air. I always call him 'twinkle toes' and tell him to put his toes down. Mom and he laugh so hard when I yell at him for it. hehe

Thanks to everyone that has showed interest in the bracelets. Hopefully they will be in soon. I'm anxious to start distributing them :)

Enjoy the nice Spring day today

Chemo Side effects linger

One of the worst side effects that Dad is facing right now is the diarrhea and fatigue. Yesterday was a bad day for him and this morning when I saw him he was pretty slow moving. We had a dinner date last night with Mom and Dad, but he had to cancel because he was not feeling well. My son brought dinner down to them and ate with them. He's so cute and said he wanted to keep them company. I was a bit dissappointed that they didn't come for dinner, but I totally get it and was very supportive.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for him.

Silicone Bracelet fundraiser

I have started a fundraiser to help Dad pay for his medical expenses which are skyrocketing right now since he's now been on chemo for almost a year and a half. As of now the orders will be pre-orders since the bracelets don't come in for about 2 weeks.   I will post a pic when they come in but they are blue with one side saying "John DBs Fight" and the other saying "NO ONE FIGHTS ALONE"

Please note that we do not accept credit cards at this time as it would cost more $ to accept the payments. Only checking account payments right now.
Thank you so much for your generosity in helping Dad out.

Just the start

With more and more people interested in how Dad is doing, I thought this blog would be a great way to keep everyone informed, especially those that do not have Facebook.  Please visit often to keep up with the latest on Dad and his treatments. I will also soon be posting information on a fundraiser.

Thanks so much to everyone for their kind words and prayers. It really means alot
